Harvest Time in the WOLF!!
We are finally back in the swing of things at Whitt Elementary, and we are now finding more time to spend in the WOLF! Right now, all of the veggies that we planted in the Spring, are becoming ready to harvest. It is a bit like an Easter egg hunt every time we visit, because we are constantly discovering new things! The students can't wait to explore the various beds and observe the changes each week!
Our favorite discoveries this week included a big bell pepper, some snap beans (that we forgot we planted), some tomatillos, and 3 rather large and stately watermelons!!

When we're not busy making new discoveries or watering and maintaining the beds, we enjoy sitting quietly and reading in the beautiful space!!
Make sure to get out there and experience the amazing things happening in the WOLF this week!!

June
Curly Top Welch has been in charge of the WOLF this June. During her term, she moved some things around in the butterfly garden in order to better arrange the watering schedule, and planted some Mexican Sunflowers. She and Mrs. Wiest also moved some mulch that was donated by a local church to the WOLF and put it in our beds to help keep them wet in between waterings.
Several families have helped out with the watering duties.
Thanks to Curly Top and all of the people who helped out in the WOLF this June!!

Readying the WOLF for Summer!!
During the last couple of weeks of school, we got busy preparing our beds for the long, hot summer! The Turk Family helped the 4th Grade ready their bed for the summer heat by separating and thinning out some of the veggies. They also applied diluted fish and seaweed emulsion to stimulate the roots, and mulched with old newspaper and cotton burr compost.
Paul from Living Earth stopped by to give us some tips on how to plant and water in the particular type of soil that we have in our beds. He also fertilized with pure Nitrogen to enrich the soil for the new plants.
We started noticing some new visitors that have begun to come in and enjoy the WOLF... We have had sightings of several monarch butterflies as well as a humming bird or two!! This guy hung around the entire time my class was in the WOLF one day. He flitted around the butterfly garden and then decided to check out the humming bird feeder!
**I apologize for the length of time that it took for me to update The Blooming WOLF! I was having some technical difficulties that I think are fixed, so expect a new update every week. If you are working in the WOLF this summer and would like to add your pictures to the blog, just email them to me at emily.turner@wylieisd.net !!
Happy Gardening!!
